The Seven C’s of CCSSM: Professional Development for Math

NC DPI is offering course-specific professional development to support secondary mathematics teachers in implementing the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, based on the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Faculty from Meredith College, UNG-Greensboro, and Appalachian State University, along with secondary teacher leaders, will provide 2-day institutes for Math I and Math II. These trainings are a repeat of this past summer’s institutes, so the goal is to reach additional participants who were not able to attend at that time. These professional development institutes will focus on critical aspects of the standards for each of the courses - and will model the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

Highlights of the professional development include opportunities for participants to focus on
• Learning new content
• Solving tasks in context
• Engaging in conversations
• Communicating mathematical understanding
• Making connections within mathematics and across disciplines
• Building coherence in the curriculum
• Cultivating pedagogical diversity

This professional development is provided free to LEAs/Charter Schools. Each participant is requested to bring a hard copy (printed on one side only to allow for notes) of the Standards for Mathematical Practice (pages 6-8 in the Common Core) and a copy of the standards for the particular course you are attending. Participants are also asked to bring a graphic calculator.

The first training to be offered will take place on February 20-21 at the NC TeleCenter, 415 East Blvd, Williamston and will cover Math II. On March 10-11 the Math I Institute will be held at Johnston Workforce Development Center, 135 Bestwood Drive, Clayton, NC 27520.

DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION SUBMISSION IS 5:00 PM FEBRUARY 10, 2014, or until spaces are filled. Registration is not final until confirmed by our office. Final confirmations will be sent out by the Curriculum and Instruction office by February 11. Register at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/EasternMathIandIITraining.

NC DPI is providing this workshop to LEAs at no cost. Transportation, meals and lodging expenses are the responsibility of the participants.

If you have questions regarding this workshop, please contact Amy Betsill Bain at 919-807-3817 or feedback@dpi.nc.gov.
