Learn NC Courses Available, Funds Diminishing, April, 2012

Principals, Faculty, and Staff,

Once again this year, you have funds set aside for teachers at your school for courses taken online through Learn NC. The primary focus area is generally in the area of extending 21st Century Skills. The award allows you to use the funds at your school for the extension of 21st Century Skills. 21st Century Skills are a pressing concern for our district and it was the reason for writing the grant. With that being said, a principal may see a critical and pressing need for the money (currently we have a limited amount of money that is available for only a short period of time) to be used on a different type of course. We are not going to hamstring you, but as mentioned the grant was written with 21st Century Skills in mind. The money is available on a first come first served basis.

We are especially looking for teachers who would like to take the three phases of the Carolina Online Teacher (COLT) program and then be willing to write their own professional development course for your school in a standardized format. If you have teachers that you believe would benefit your school by completing this program, please encourage them to register for those courses.

Below you will find a link to a catalog to find courses that meet these requirements.  If you believe that you have a teacher that might be interested or if your school could benefit by a teacher taking one of these classes then have them register at the links below.

In addition, teachers will need to register in the Staff Development Manager – http://staffdev.ucps.k12.nc.us/ . Some courses have a prior approval already in the system, but many courses do not.  Our plan is to reallocate funds each month to schools that are utilizing the funds quickly so we can receive maximum benefit from their knowledge throughout the year.

The process will require your approval in order to use your funds. The teacher(s) will come to you to get your approval and if you agree, then send them to the link below (http://goo.gl/F7Rrw) to register.  We will subtract the cost of the course from your allotment. Additional awards will be made to your school if you are able to quickly disperse your funds. If you have any questions, then please don’t hesitate to contact me. Please see the upcoming list of courses at the bottom of this email. Thank you.

In the summer of 2012 the National Humanities Center, with suppport from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, will again offer three online professional development seminars exclusively for North Carolina high school teachers of American history and literature. They will directly address the following learning objectives:
  • Competency Goal 1; Objective 1.01: Identify the major domestic issues and conflicts experienced by the nation during the Federalist Period.
  • Competency Goal 3; Objective 3.01: Trace the economic, social, and political events from the Mexican War to the outbreak of the Civil War.
  • Competency Goal 3; Objective 3.03: Identify political and military turning points of the Civil War and assess their significance to the outcome of the conflict.
Participants will receive a stipend of $100. (Participants must submit an evaluation and will receive only one stipend even if he/she participates in multiple seminars.)

These seminars focus on teaching with primary sources - historical documents, literary texts, visual images, and audio material. Emphasizing critical analysis and close reading, they address the Common Core State Standards while giving teachers the opportunity to deepen their content knowledge.

Seminar texts are provided free online. The Center draws texts from a variety of sources, including America in Class® primary sources, and attempts to select fresh material that will invigorate classroom instruction. Each seminar will require from 35 to 50 pages of reading. Participation requires a computer with an internet connection and the ability to accommodate speakers and a microphone.

Recertification Credit: Three National Humanities Center online seminars will provide thirteen and a half contact hours or 1 CEU credit. Because the seminars are conducted online, they may qualify for technology credit in districts that award it. The Center will provide documentation of participation.

Registration Deadline: May 31, 2012

This program is made possible by a grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.
