NCASA School Law Symposium

NCASA School Law Symposium

September 23-24
Sheraton Raleigh Hotel

Join NCASA for the premier school law professional development event for school administrators in North Carolina. Space is limited - register today!

The NCASA School Law Symposium is the best place for school administrators, from the director of child nutrition to superintendent, to learn from experts in the field of education law.

From the time Moses received the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai, the law has been a part of the lives of human beings. The first five books of the Bible contain the rules to live by to ensure that people lived up to the standards of the Ten Commandments. Failing to follow these laws could have serious implications, including death.

Death is not a consequence of failing to follow the laws that govern public education today, but serious issues are created for school administrators when the law is not followed. Wise school administrators make sure they know everything they can about education law so they can prevent the difficulties that arise when someone fails to follow the law.

Secure your spot early to take advantage of the discounted registration rate of $150, which ends August 15. Hotel reservations may be made through NCASA's room block at the Sheraton Raleigh Hotel.Visit www.ncasa.net for complete registration and hotel information.

Topics include:

  • Political Speech in the Schools
  • New Legal Tools to Combat Cyberbullying in the Schools
  • Happy Holidays: What Can You Say/Do in Public Schools?
  • Legal Issues and Questions Under the New Student Discipline Laws
  • The Powers and Duties of Principals: Understanding and Implementing Them; Recent Changes
  • Current “Hot Button” Legal Issues: The Top 10
  • Surreptitious Recordings: “If You Can’t Say Anything Nice…”
  • New Procedures for Nonrenewal of Probationary Teachers
  • Legal Pitfalls in Special Education (or “How to Avoid Being Sued”)

Comments from past participants:

“Thank you for providing an outstanding School Law Symposium. Each session was meaningful, relevant and informative with a touch of humor that kept us interested. I highly recommend this Symposium to all school and central office administration.”
Karen Hyler, Public Information Officer, Rockingham County Schools

“The School Law Symposium was meaningful, informative, interesting (and entertaining). The attorneys were great presenters and were able to add just the right amount of humor to keep things lively!”
Anne McLean, Principal, Montgomery County Schools

“I wish every principal and human resources director from my district were here. The information is not only presented clearly, but the advice on how to navigate the law from policy to administrative practice is a tremendous help.”
Eddie Ingram, Superintendent, Franklin County Schools

Math Education Training Program at Appalachian State University

School District Superintendents:

As school district administrators, responsible for both the implementation of the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and the success of your students, you are continually seeking how to best assist the mathematics teachers in your district.  While this is a daunting task, the following professional development opportunity may meet some of the needs of your district and mathematics teachers.  Please consider forwarding this information to principals, mathematics department chairs, and mathematics teachers in your district and schools.  Most years, these Institutes fill up quickly.  Reserving space early is essential.

With North Carolina’s adoption of the Common Core State Standards, teachers, schools, and districts are all in search of effective and valuable professional development opportunities directly focusing on these new standards.  Since 1998, the Mathematics Education Training Program (MELT) at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC has provided cutting edge professional development opportunities for K-12 mathematics teachers.  This year, MELT will focus on the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and provide professional development for K-12 mathematics teachers through week-long, residential, Summer Institutes focusing on the mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge needed by mathematics teachers to assist their students to succeed.  Each Institute provides participants with the opportunity of earning either continuing education units (CEUs) or graduate credits.  Included in this focus will be:
  • The content and delivery of each Institute will mirror the style and content proposed in the Common Core.  This will help ensure that MELT teacher participants gain both the content knowledge and the confidence to replicate and extend the content covered in these courses in their own classrooms.
  • Integrated pedagogical and epistemological considerations and experiences (e.g., instruction and learning through: inquiry based methods, mathematical modeling, using technology, assessment strategies, reasoning and problem solving, Standards on Mathematical Practices and NCTM Process Standards, and investigating teacher and student beliefs) will be paramount and will accompany the mathematical content.
  • Considerations on the nature and practice of leadership will be infused into every course.  Participants will consider means and techniques of bringing what they have learned back to their classrooms, schools, districts and the state.
All MELT Institutes are co-instructed by a university faculty and a K-12 Master Teacher.

The MELT Institutes for Summer 2013 include:
  • Week 1: June 17-21, 2013
    • Geometry in the Common Core
    • Navigating Course 1 in the Mathematics Common Core
  • Week 2: June 24-28, 2013
    • Algebra and Functions in the Common Core
    • Navigating Course 2 in the Mathematics Common Core
  • Week 3: July 8-12, 2013
    • Navigating Course 3 in the Mathematics Common Core
    • Mathematical Modeling through Data and Statistics (6-12)
  • Week 4: July 15-19, 2013
    • Building Mathematical Thinkers through Assessment and Inquiry (K-6)
    • Building Mathematical Thinkers through Assessment and Inquiry (7-12)
Descriptions of these courses are available online.

Fuller descriptions of the MELT program, the Summer Institutes, and the daily schedule for the Summer Institutes are available online.  A brief Promotional Brochure and the Registration Form are also provided to assist teachers, schools, and districts with the registration process.
