1.      2011 Local Government Seminar: What Does Local Government Do and How Do I Get My Students to Care?

Deadline: June 22, 2011

The 2011 Local Government Seminar will explore the role of local government in North Carolina and provide pedagogical strategies for teaching young people about how local government in North Carolina works.  Sponsored by the NC City & County Management Association, this year’s training will be held in Durham, NC and it includes conversations with various elected and unelected government officials, dinner with an assistant county manager, and a Durham Bulls baseball game!  To learn more about this training, visit the Consortium’s website.

2.      Consortium and UNC Program in the Humanities and Human Values Partner to Offer Upcoming “Challenges to Democracy” Training

The NC Civic Education Consortium and the Program in the Humanities & Human Values at UNC-Chapel Hill have partnered to offer teachers a unique three-day exploration of the theme “Challenges to Democracy.” The training will take place Monday, July 11 – Wednesday, July 13 at UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Government. Through assorted readings, films, and seminars led by UNC-Chapel Hill professors, participants will explore topics including the erosion of democracy, fear in democracy, democracies and hypocrisy and changes to democracy. 3.      UNC Program in the Humanities and Human Values Announces A Fantastic Lineup of Summer Seminars.

Register now to secure a spot in a seminar offered by the Program in the Humanities. Teachers receive a 50% discount off tuition and are eligible to win travel scholarships as a part of the Daisy Edmister Fund. Seminars are one or two-day events, Friday evening and Saturday morning or all day Saturday. 4.      Law Institute For Teachers (LIFT)

The North Carolina Bar Association is pleased to offer this terrific opportunity for all of North Carolina’s teachers – Law Institute for Teachers (LIFT).
